Overview
The GSMA State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money is the industry's standard reference and tracks mobile money accounts, usage and transaction value across providers worldwide [1]. The latest edition reports 2.3 billion registered mobile money accounts and 593 million active 30-day accounts globally [1].
Annual mobile money transaction value reached USD 2 trillion in 2025, double the level of 2021 [2].
Growth
GSMA notes that it took the mobile money industry 20 years to pass USD 1 trillion in annual transaction value - but only four years from that point for the figure to double [1]. The report describes industry revenues as rising in line with strong transaction volume and value growth, supported by a more conducive regulatory environment [1].
Usage and Engagement
The global 30-day activity rate - the share of registered accounts active in the last 30 days - gained around half a percentage point to 25.7% in 2025, the highest since 2021 [1]. GSMA says mobile money's value proposition to people and businesses now goes beyond pure access and increasingly supports financial health and resilience through savings, credit and insurance products [1].
Methodology
Figures come from the GSMA State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money and the associated GSMA press release [1][2]. GSMA aggregates provider-reported data from live mobile money services worldwide. An 'account' is a registered mobile money wallet; '30-day active' means an account that has performed at least one transaction in the last 30 days. Transaction value is in USD, converted from local currencies by GSMA. Historic comparisons (the $1 trillion threshold) are nominal USD.
