Executive Summary
Waymo served 15 million rides in 2025, more than tripling its annual volume, and passed 20 million lifetime rides. It began serving over 1 million fully autonomous rides a month in spring 2025 and aims to reach that number every week by the end of 2026. Weekly trips grew from over 150,000 at the end of 2024 to more than 450,000 by December 2025, as reported by CNBC. Waymo lists 12 US cities where anyone can hail a fully autonomous ride.
Key Numbers
- Weekly paid rides, Dec 2025
- >450,000[3]
- Weekly paid rides per Tiger Global investor letter reported by CNBC
Overview
Fully driverless ride-hailing is now operating at commercial scale in the United States, led by Waymo, the Alphabet robotaxi unit [3]. This report tracks the scale of rider-only service using the operator's own disclosures. Regulatory data from the California DMV, CPUC and NHTSA will be added when verified.
Growth in Rides
Waymo said it was serving over 150,000 trips every week at the end of 2024 [2]. CNBC reported 250,000 paid rides a week in April 2025 and more than 450,000 by December 2025, the latter from a Tiger Global investor letter [3]. Waymo's official Facebook page later cited 500,000 paid rides per week [5].
In spring 2025 Waymo began serving over 1 million fully autonomous rides every month, a number it says it is on a path to hit every week by the end of 2026 [1]. That end-2026 target is a company goal, not an actual. Waymo reported 15 million rides in 2025, more than tripling its annual volume, and over 20 million lifetime rides [1]. Riders spent over 3.8 million hours in Waymo vehicles in 2025 [1].
Autonomous Miles and Safety
CNBC reported that Waymo announced 100 million total fully autonomous miles in July 2025 [3]. Waymo's FAQ refers to more than 200 million miles of fully autonomous driving on public roads [4], and a Waymo blog post dated September 24, 2026 refers to 270 million autonomous miles [6]. Waymo reports more than a 10-fold reduction in serious injury or worse crashes compared with human drivers [1]. This is the company's own safety analysis.
Cities Served
Waymo's FAQ lists 12 cities where anyone can hail a fully autonomous ride: Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Metro Phoenix, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and Tampa [4]. Waymo said it was preparing ride-hailing in over 20 additional cities in 2026, including Tokyo and London [1]. Freeway rides were available in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and Phoenix by end-2025, and Waymo received permits to serve San Jose and San Francisco international airports [1].
Methodology
Most figures are Waymo's own disclosures on its official blog and FAQ [1][2][4][6] and its official social media page [5]. Weekly ride figures for April and December 2025 come from CNBC, which reported Waymo's April milestone and a Tiger Global investor letter [3]. Rides, trips and paid rides are used as reported by each source and may not be strictly comparable. No independent market size is given because no primary source for it was verified.
