Overview

The world auto industry returned to growth in 2025. Global vehicle production rose from 92.7 million units in 2024 to 96.4 million in 2025, an increase of 3.9% [1]. Global sales climbed from 95.3 million to 99.8 million units, up 4.7% [1].

OICA describes the growth as uneven. Output is concentrating in Asia, Europe is flat and the Americas face tension between demand, production and trade conditions [1].

Regional Analysis

  • Asia-Pacific: production rose 7.6% to around 59.2 million vehicles in 2025, more than 61% of global output [1]. Sales across Asia, Oceania and the Middle East increased from 51.39 million to 55.02 million units (+7.1%), lifting the region's share of global sales above 55% [1].
  • Europe: production slipped 0.8% to 17.2 million vehicles and sales edged down 0.4% to 18.63 million [1]. Germany remained the largest European production base [1].

Methodology

Headline 2024 and 2025 figures come from OICA's 2025 results press release, presented in Beijing [1]. OICA counts motor vehicles, which include passenger cars and commercial vehicles; production is attributed to the country of final assembly. Passenger car figures for 2024 come from ACEA's Economic and Market Report for full-year 2024 [2], which covers cars only, so they are not directly comparable with OICA's all-vehicle totals.

China's share of world production is a FREEE.REPORT calculation dividing China's 2025 production (34.53 million) by world production (96.4 million) [1]. All values are reported actuals in units, not forecasts.
