Overview
This report currently covers India, the largest two-wheeler market with official segment data in this library. Global two-wheeler and electric two-wheeler data from the IEA will be added when verified.
India's two-wheeler sales reached 1,96,07,332 units in FY 2024-25 (April 2024 - March 2025), up 9.1% [1]. Domestic sales remain below the earlier peak of 21 million units in FY 2019 [2]. Two-wheelers made up about 76.6% of India's four-segment domestic vehicle sales (FREEE.REPORT calculation from SIAM segment totals) [1].
Growth and Drivers
SIAM attributes the recovery to improved rural demand and a resurgence in consumer confidence [1]. Growth was led by scooters, helped by better rural and semi-urban connectivity and new models [1].
In March 2025 alone, two-wheeler sales were 16,56,939 units [1]. Sales in January - March 2025 were 45,67,762 units [1].
Exports
Electric Two-Wheelers
SIAM's analysis of the Vahan database shows electric two-wheeler registrations of 11.5 lakh units in FY 2024-25, up 21.2% [1]. Total EV registrations of all types were 1.97 million [1], so e-two-wheelers were about 58% of EV registrations (FREEE.REPORT calculation: 1.15 million / 1.97 million). The EV share of overall two-wheeler sales crossed 6% [1]. SIAM links adoption to the EMPS scheme (April - September 2024) and the PM E-DRIVE scheme [1].
Methodology
Sales, export growth and EV registration figures come from SIAM's FY 2024-25 press release [1]. Export volumes in lakh units and the FY 2019 peak come from the SIAM Annual Report 2024-25 [2]. One lakh equals 100,000. EV registrations come from the Vahan registration database and are not identical to manufacturer wholesale sales.
FREEE.REPORT calculations: e-2W share of EV registrations = 11.5 lakh / 19.7 lakh; two-wheeler share of domestic sales = 1,96,07,332 / 2,56,07,271 (sum of PV, CV, three-wheeler and two-wheeler sales).
