Overview
India's automobile industry grew 7.3% in domestic sales in FY 2024-25 (April 2024 - March 2025) and exports rose 19.2% [1]. Total production of passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles was 3,10,34,174 units in the year [1].
Domestic sales of the four main segments add up to 2,56,07,271 units (FREEE.REPORT calculation from SIAM segment totals, excluding quadricycles) [1]. Two-wheelers account for about 76.6% of that total (FREEE.REPORT calculation) [1]. OICA reports India produced 6.49 million motor vehicles in calendar 2025 [2].
Segmentation
- Passenger vehicles: 43,01,848 units, the highest ever, up 2% on a high base [1]. Utility vehicles made up 65% of PV sales, compared with about 60% in FY 2023-24 [1].
- Two-wheelers: 1,96,07,332 units, up 9.1%, led by scooters [1].
- Three-wheelers: 7,41,420 units, up 6.7%, surpassing the previous peak of FY 2019 [1].
- Commercial vehicles: 9,56,671 units, down 1.2%, though January - March 2025 grew 1.5% [1].
Exports
Exports grew in every segment in FY 2024-25 [3]. Passenger vehicle exports rose from 6.72 lakh to 7.70 lakh units, the highest ever, driven by demand in Latin America and Africa [3][1]. Two-wheeler exports rose from 34.58 lakh to 41.98 lakh units [3]. Commercial vehicle exports increased from 0.66 lakh to 0.81 lakh units, and three-wheeler exports from 3.00 lakh to 3.07 lakh units [3].
Electric Vehicles
SIAM's analysis of the Vahan registration database shows total EV registrations of 1.97 million units in FY 2024-25, up 16.9% from 1.68 million [1]. Electric passenger vehicle registrations crossed 1 lakh units, up 18.2% [1]. Electric two-wheeler registrations reached 11.5 lakh units, up 21.2%, and e-three-wheeler registrations were close to 7 lakh units, up 10.5% [1]. The EV share of two-wheeler sales crossed 6% in FY 2024-25 [1].
Policy & Regulation
SIAM cites the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS), which ran from 1 April 2024 to 30 September 2024, followed by the PM E-DRIVE and PM e-Sewa schemes, as support for EV adoption [1]. SIAM also expects personal income tax reforms in the Union Budget 2025-26 and RBI rate cuts to support vehicle financing demand in FY 2025-26 [1]. This is an industry outlook, not a forecast figure.
Methodology
Domestic sales, production and EV figures come from SIAM's press release on FY 2024-25 performance [1]. SIAM notes that data for BMW, Mercedes, JLR and Volvo Auto are not available in PV totals, and Daimler and JBM Auto are not in CV totals [1]. Export figures in lakh units come from the SIAM Annual Report 2024-25 [3]. One lakh equals 100,000. India's calendar-2025 production comes from OICA [2] and uses a different period than India's April-March financial year.
The four-segment domestic total and segment shares are FREEE.REPORT calculations: 43,01,848 + 9,56,671 + 7,41,420 + 1,96,07,332 = 2,56,07,271 units; each segment divided by that total.
