Executive Summary
The global stock of public EV charging points passed 7 million at the end of 2025, after nearly 1.8 million were added that year, according to the IEA. China holds more than 65% of them, having grown from nearly 3.4 million to over 4.7 million points in 2025. The US Alternative Fuels Data Center lists 260,086 public charging ports at 82,509 locations. India had 52,718 public charging stations as of July 2026, per PIB.

Overview
Nearly 1.8 million public charging points were added worldwide in 2025, more than 33% above the previous year's additions, in line with growth of the electric light-duty fleet [1]. The total public stock reached more than 7 million at the end of 2025 [1]. Most charging still happens at home or work; public points matter most for drivers without private parking, long trips and commercial fleets.
Regional Analysis
China holds more than 65% of the world's public charging points [1]. Its stock grew from nearly 3.4 million at the end of 2024 to over 4.7 million at the end of 2025, more than 75% of global growth [1]. About 1.3 million points were added there in 2025, and there were ten electric LDVs per public point [1].
In the United States, the Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) lists 82,509 electric station locations with 260,086 charging ports [3]. Of these ports, 182,118 are Level 2, 77,258 are DC fast and 698 are Level 1 [3]. The IEA counted almost 200,000 public LDV charging points in the US at the end of 2024, with around 32 electric LDVs per point [2]. The US Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported about 32,000 EV charging stations by early 2021 and another 19,000 opened between January 2021 and April 2023 [5].
In India, BHEL data cited by PIB show 52,718 public charging stations as of July 2026, of which 16,561 have fast charging [4]. The IEA counted about 75,000 public charging points in India at the end of 2024, with fewer than 4 electric LDVs per point [2].
Forecast
The IEA's Stated Policies Scenario (STEPS) projects:
- Europe: public charging points double to more than 2 million by 2030, with the fast-charger share rising from under 20% in 2024 to 30% [2].
- United States: from almost 200,000 at the end of 2024 to over 500,000 by 2030 [2].
- India: from 75,000 at the end of 2024 to around 375,000 by 2030, needing about 50,000 additions a year [2].
Globally, the IEA estimates average annual additions of around 1.6 million points are required through 2030 [1]. These are scenario projections.
Methodology
Global, China and outlook figures are IEA estimates of public charging points (individual connectors able to charge one vehicle at a time) [1][2]. AFDC counts publicly accessible station locations and EVSE ports from its live Station Locator; the figure reflects the page when accessed in 2026 and the three charging levels sum to 12 fewer than the reported port total [3]. IEA and AFDC US figures differ because of dates and definitions. India's PIB figure counts stations, which can host several points, so it is not comparable with the IEA's point count [2][4]. Forecast labels carry an 'F' suffix.
