Overview

GDP can be ranked in two ways. Nominal GDP converts each country's output into US dollars at market exchange rates. PPP GDP adjusts for differences in price levels and is expressed in international dollars.

The United States and China are the two largest economies on both measures in 2026, according to IMF World Economic Outlook (April 2026) projections compiled by StatisticsTimes [1]. In nominal terms the United States leads China by about USD 11.5 trillion, while on a PPP basis China exceeds the United States by about Int. $11.9 trillion [1].

Top 10 by Nominal GDP

The IMF projects United States GDP at USD 32,383.92 billion in 2026, up from USD 30,767.08 billion in 2025 [1]. China follows at USD 20,851.59 billion, then Germany at USD 5,452.86 billion [1].

Japan (USD 4,379.25 billion), the United Kingdom (USD 4,264.79 billion) and India (USD 4,153.19 billion) rank fourth to sixth and remain close in size [1]. Germany overtook Japan in 2023 to become the third-largest economy by nominal GDP [1].

Two changes are projected within the nominal top 10 in 2026: Italy moves ahead of Russia, and Brazil replaces Canada in tenth place [1]. The United States and China together account for 42.1% of world nominal GDP in 2026 (freereports.online calculation from the IMF shares of 25.6% and 16.5%) [1].

Top 10 by PPP

On a PPP basis China is projected at Int. $44,295.45 billion in 2026, or 19.9% of the world total [1]. The United States follows at Int. $32,383.92 billion (14.5%) and India at Int. $18,902.32 billion (8.49%) [1].

Russia, Japan, Germany, Indonesia, Brazil, France and the United Kingdom complete the PPP top 10 [1]. No changes are expected within the PPP top 20 in 2026 [1].

Growth Outlook

The IMF's July 2026 World Economic Outlook Update projects 2026 real GDP growth of 6.4% for India, 4.6% for China, 2.3% for the United States, 0.7% for Germany and 0.6% for Japan [2]. For 2025 the same update shows 7.7% for India, 5.0% for China, 2.1% for the United States, 0.2% for Germany and 1.1% for Japan [2].

The April 2026 projections used in the rankings had slightly different 2026 growth rates, for example 4.41% for China and 6.48% for India [1]. Vietnam is projected to be the fastest-growing of the top 50 economies in 2026 at 7.10% [1].

IMF vs World Bank Figures

Different publishers produce different GDP values because of timing, revisions and exchange-rate methods. The World Bank's 2025 figures, as compiled on Wikipedia, put United States GDP at about USD 30.77 trillion, China at about USD 19.50 trillion and India at about USD 3.96 trillion [3]. The ranking order of the top six is the same as in the IMF 2025 data [1][3].

Methodology

Rankings and values come from IMF World Economic Outlook (April 2026) data as compiled by StatisticsTimes (dated 31 July 2026) [1]. 2026 values are IMF projections, not final outturns; 2025 values are IMF estimates. Nominal GDP is in billions of current US dollars; PPP GDP is in billions of international dollars. Growth rates are from the IMF July 2026 WEO Update [2]. World Bank 2025 values are taken from a Wikipedia table that reports IMF, World Bank and UN figures side by side [3].

freereports.online calculation: the combined US and China share of 42.1% is the sum of the IMF-reported 2026 shares of 25.6% and 16.5% [1].
